"I still wake up white in a city that ain't." - Carcetti Thomas
"Herc" Hauk is now working for the Mayor's security detail. He catches Royce in a compromising position and learns how to spin it into a promotion opportunity. Namond visits his father, Wee-Bey Brice, in prison. Wee-Bey urges Namond to work harder at his job with drug dealer Bodie Broadus but Namond swaps it with Michael as he is in greater financial need. Bunk Moreland investigates a murder but finds his prime suspect missing. Rhonda Pearlman and Lester Freamon argue over delivering subpoenas to political figures. Another murder involving a state's witness gives Carcetti damaging ammunition in a debate with Royce. Marlo gives money away to the neighborhood children and Michael catches his attention when he refuses the handout. Dennis "Cutty" Wise continues to run the community boxing gym and also notices Michael because of his aptitude for the sport. Bubbles mentors young and homeless Sherrod in his junk selling business.
What did you think of episode 2? The scene that always scares me is when Namond's mum takes him to see his dad in prison and she is obsessed with him working as a corner boy. What do you think of Namond? What did you think about Bubbles and Sherrod selling junk in the streets? What do you think itsthe function of the gym?
Anything else you found interesting in this episode?

Episode 2 was ok, but it had quite a low to do with politics which I', not that interested in.
ReplyDeleteI dont like Namond. I think he's quite selfish and untrustowrthy. He's not a good friend to the others and I think is quite spoilt as well coz even though his mum told him to earn his own money for school clothes, she still ended up buying him nice clothes and allowing him to smoke.
I think Bubbles and Sherrod selling junk in the street is a good idea, it's better than selling drugs on the street. I like their characters as well. I think Bubbles seems caring and compassionate as he tries to get Sherrod into school.
The gyms function is to keep kids off the street and let them release their anger out in a controlled environment like the gym, rather than outside on the streets, with other gangs etc.
i found episode 2 very intresting, namond is a good charecter i like his involvement in more than one scene for example, school and with his friends, he seems to have some importance due to his father, the scene when he goes to visit his dad suprised me about how they all were okay about him being a corner boy. I thought parents were meant to encourage not to do that sort of stuff. The gym idea is really good as it does keep kids of the street and the leader of the gym being offered food by the ladies is also quite funny. All in all the episode was very good.
ReplyDeleteI think Episode 2 was good as it helps us understand the characters a bit better. I also think that Namond is selfish and a free loader, this is because I think he is old enough to get a proper job rather than loitering on street corners. However, his mother doesn't stick to what she says about him getting a job and I think that she gives in too easily to anything her precious son wants! ...i think the gym is a good idea as it helps keep the youngsters out of trouble...i thought that the ladies giving Dennis food was funny as he wasnt particularly interested in them but in two of the youngsters fighting....
ReplyDeletehey...
ReplyDeletei feel that the scene where Namond is taking to his dad is very frightening because it shows that his parents both want him to be a corner boy , as if its a part of life and they are scared that he could be killed at any time by rival gangs. They feel that he has to be a corner boy to uphold a reputation.
Also when bubbles was selling stolen goods on the streets , everyone felt that was normal and also it was the only source of bubbles income. However I feel that as bad as the situation is of selling stolen goods, its better than selling drugs.
I also like the idea of the gym being created because it allows the boys to release their frustration through boxing , however this could also be very threatening to the corner boys as they will use this violence outside the gym as well.
i'm not sure which episode it was, but i really found this interesting. This was when Michael lee walked away from $500 for school gear.As he witnessed a death and was part of it, he didn't want to be a corner boy any more.
This time the police section confused me more as opposed to the politics section (I found the politics quite amusing in this episode) as I didn't understand at first what subpoenas was or how this linked into the politics bit.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for Namond as his mum cares more about him working on the corner for her materialistic things and upholding their family reputation (following his father) rather than being concerned for her own son's safety.
Although selling junk in the streets isn't an ideal way to earn money, I think that the partnership between Bubbles and Sherrod is really sweet as they seem to have father-son instincts to look out for each other (Bubbles trying to motivate Sherrod to go to school).
The function of the gym is an attempt to keep corner boys out of trouble and also try and teach them to have respect for each other and take out any anger they have in a monitored way off the streets.
