Episode 3

I love the first day, man. Everybody all friendly an' shit." - Namond Brice
Royce strikes back against Carcetti with his mayoral powers, however, he alienates State Delegate Watkins over his refusal to fund witness protection. Carcetti impresses Watkins by his reserved behaviour at the funeral of the murdered witness. Bunk visits Jimmy McNulty and Beadie Russell for dinner and finds McNulty sober and enjoying domestic life. Marlo Stanfield visits Bodie's corner and muscles him into selling the Stanfield package. Marlo is impressed with Michael a second time when he sees him working for Bodie. Proposition Joe and his New Day Co-Op face problems on two fronts; New York drug dealers on the East side and the Stanfield Organization in the West; they agree to attempt to negotiate with Marlo. Omar Little robs a Stanfield stash house. Rawls sends a caustic new lieutenant to gut the major case unit from the inside. Freamon and Kima Greggs leave for the homicide unit. Howard "Bunny" Colvin embarks on a new career as a researcher into violent behaviour. Prez is shocked by a violent incident in his classroom.

What did you think of the school scenes? You all seemed quite shocked at the end - why? What do you think about Randy changing his uniform to sell chocolates to other school kids in the other years? What do you think Michael is all about? Why does he refuse money from Marlo and then go and work on Bodie's corner? What is your opinion of Marlo?

Finally, what do you think about the behaviour of the man in the jail cell when he was being asked questions about his sister?

Are you getting more into it?

Don't worry about the politics. If you like it and understand it, that's brilliant (Aadil!), but if you don't then it's also kind of the point - is the politics relevant to the people of Baltimore? Does it try to help them or is it just a load of old men trying to make money and get themselves promoted?

  1. I liked the school scene coz we can kind of relate to it, as we're in school as well. We can compare their school to ours and see the differences.

Was shoked at the end because of the way the girl just lashed out at her and cut her face as if no-one was there. She didn't seem too bothered by it or anything, seemed normal to HER but everyone in the class seemed shocked and didnt know what to do, so I assumed this is the first time it happened.

I like Randy and I think him selling chocolates in school is quite clever and good for him coz at least hes making some money by doing that and not illegally.

I dont know why Michael rejected the money, but probably coz he doesn't want to work for Marlo. :S

Marlo is clever in the way he pays money out to the kids so he can use them when he needs to. He seems quite quiet and casual, unlike Bodie who is quite cocky and rude sometimes. Marlo has this quiet confidence about him.

He's aggressive and obviously reluctant to answer the questions.

yeah I am getting into it as I'm gettin used to the characters and their personalities.

  2. I think it was a good episode, i enjoyed the bit when the girl stabbed the other girl in the face.

I also think how it is good that marlo gives the kids money so he can use and abuse them later in life.

The storyline still a bit complicated because theres multiple stories in one episode, but im starting to see how they are cleverly linked together.

  3. i think this episode was the best so far, school scenes we could relate to also the idea of randy selling chocolates is quite a good way of making money however, at that age he wants to make money the wrong way, it can be compared to when hes older making money the wrong way again with selling drugs, the mindset of making money at a young age strikes me. I like carcetti and i believe he genuinely wants to help baltimore as he visited a funeral etc however finding it hard to persuarde to majority black electorate.
My favourite charecter is Marlow, he is the most intresting and has high authority and i cant wait to see what happens next with him, will the police put the money and marlow together or will a rival gang member have friction with marlow, i cant wait all i know is that something big is about to happen.

  4. I really enjoyed this episode as i think that it was humorous as well as serious. I think that the idea of Randy changing his uniform is very clever as he is able to blend in with the younger years to make a profit. In a way this could signify that he has learnt the tricks of the 'trade'.ie from the drugs. I was really shocked at the end because even though there where continuous jump cuts from the 2 girls, which effectively created tension in the classroom, we didnt expect one of them to slice the other! ....I think that Carcetti is trying to make a difference to Baltimore as he made the effort to visit the people at the funeral. However Baltimore only seem to give in after another person from that area was killed!...

  5. i really enjoyed this episode because it shows how bad situations are at school , i.e the girl who sliced the other girls face :0 .It just shows how bad life is at school , however maybe at home to , there may be a case of domestic violence which makes the children be so violent towards one another. i say this because we don't know much about the girl and maybe we will get to know her story in the next episode.

also about randy it was really weird to see that he is trying to make money himself by selling chocolates in school.it almost feels like he is greedy and wants to be part of the game.it clearly shows that he is not at school to learn however to earn money for himself.

  6. I did find the school scenes very shocking as school is supposed to be an environment which children are supposed to feel safe in (and for some, an escape), however this is clearly not the same kind of idea due to the knife violence (which was between 2 girls, making it even more surprising).
I thought it was funny how Randy was cheeky and witty enough to think of changing his uniform to make some extra money out of ripping off younger, vulnerable people.
At this particular point, I was rather puzzled about Michael as he came across as having money as one of his main priorities, but when he refused money from Marlo this made me confused about him. However, as Marlo is associated with being the "baddy", it made me think that Michael is a good guy at heart even if he does work on the corner here and there as he's cautious with who he associates with.
I am definitely getting a lot more into The Wire, it is quite challenging at times to keep up with, but that is what makes it more interesting as it keeps you focused throughout.
